BUSES

Buses run between most Tanzanian cities; these are large 30 seater plus. The main bus route is between Arusha and Dar es Salaam. There are also luxury buses in operation, which are in relatively good condition. They operate vehicles of the Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo or Chinese brands which are equipped with higher comfort than the usual buses: reclining seats, enough legroom, television, air conditioning.

In the last years after many fatal bus journeys the government has cracked down on speeding buses and driving at night. This has had a positive affect and buses are now relatively safe to travel with.

 BOATS

Ferries operate between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Zanzibar and Pemba, as well as Dar es Salaam and Mtwara. The inland lakes of Tanzania, such as Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi, also have a variety of ferry services.

 RAILWAY

There are irregular rail services between Dar es Salaam and Kigoma, via Dodoma and Tabora. A second route connects Tabora and Mwanza. The third railway line can be booked from Dar es Salaam, via Mbiya to Kapiri Mposhi (Zambia).

 RENTAL CAR

Renting a four-wheel drive vehicle in Tanzania is not recommended due to the enormous accident rates and poor road conditions.

TAXI

If you call a taxi, you should negotiate the fare with the taxi driver before boarding. There are no meters. The larger cities now use apps including Uber

Daladala (public transport)

In contrast to the European city buses, there are usually only minibuses (Daladala) within the cities and between the towns. However, these are completely overcrowded but are affordable and is the cheapest way to get around; they are no problem for foreigners to travel on but we do recommend you secure your personal belongings.
